My first blog :) How did Unique Deesigns begin?
Rewind way back to 2003. I was in full-time employment, getting ready to embark on a personal journey into motherhood. I was expecting my first child and left to go on maternity leave. Just 12 days later, my daughter was born.
During my 4-month absence, I was informed that I was being made redundant. So in October of that year, it was bye-bye job! Now, what should I do? So, I decided to embrace being a mother and enjoy the moment, which not many people get the chance to do.
The following year, we welcomed our son into the world just 20 months later, so parenthood was in full swing with two children under the age of two. It was hard work, to say the least. My husband travelled often for work, meaning I couldn’t maintain a typical work/family lifestyle.
As the children started nursery and school, I finally had some free time to consider getting a little job, but it didn’t happen. I wondered what would work to get the balance right. So on a whim, I bought some crafting tools that someone was selling on eBay, along with papers and card from cardmaking magazines, and I began crafting at night whilst the kids were in bed and my husband was travelling for work. Little did I know where it would lead me! 😊
In 2007, I turned this newfound passion into a business, launching my own handmade greeting card and keepsake gift business, "Unique Deesigns".
The name I chose is a play on my nickname 'Dee', hence the two E's in 'Deesigns'. It isn't a spelling mistake, as some people take pleasure in spotting it and trying to correct me. It is quite comical when they realise what I've done.
My first ever card is shown below 😊
In 2012, I ventured into the world of wedding stationery and attended my first wedding fair in 2017. It was nerve-wracking, to say the least, but I did it and met some wonderful people, and to this day, I am still in contact with most of them.
Since that moment, I have cherished every part of the journey with my couples, from our initial meeting to their special day.
Fast forward to 2020, where, like many small businesses, I faced unexpected challenges. During this time, I joined a networking group, forging valuable connections and friendships across the wedding sector and beyond. This led to exciting opportunities, including designing corporate Christmas cards— a venture I welcomed with open arms.
Since then, I'm thrilled to announce that I now collaborate with 12 wedding suppliers, a venue, and a local business. Diversifying my offerings to include branded business cards, brochures, folders, and more has expanded the scope of my creativity. Yet, I remain deeply committed to designing bespoke stationery for weddings and special occasions.
With 200 weddings and hundreds of cards to date, crafting unique, heartfelt designs has been incredibly fulfilling, adding a personal touch to life's most cherished moments.
I offer a heartfelt thank you to my wonderful customers, wedding couples, business clients, and supporters who have been integral to my incredible journey. Your trust and encouragement have been instrumental in my growth and success.
I eagerly anticipate many more years of creativity and collaboration ahead!
